The Aurora Forecast isn't guesswork. It's driven by the Kp Index—a real-time measurement of Earth's magnetic disturbance caused by solar wind colliding with our magnetosphere. Think of it as a seismic richter scale, but for the Sun's mood. Right now, the Kp is holding steady at 1.0, with solar wind speeds at just 1 km/s—quiet conditions. HOW AURORA FORMS

Aurora happens when charged particles from the solar wind—electrons and protons—collide with oxygen and nitrogen in Earth's upper atmosphere (60–200 miles up). Oxygen glows green; nitrogen glows red or blue. The Sun is always sending wind at us, but when a geomagnetic storm erupts (Kp > 5), the influx intensifies, and the lights dance further south, sometimes visible as far down as the northern United States.
