HOW NASA FIRMS DETECTS FIRE FROM ORBIT

FIRMS stands for Fire Information for Resource Management System. It combines data from two NASA satellite instruments: MODIS (on Aqua and Terra) and VIIRS (on Suomi NPP and NOAA-20). Together, they scan Earth twice daily with infrared sensitivity so acute they can spot a campfire in a remote canyon.
