A wildfire ignites in the mountains of Nevada. Within three hours, a satellite 438 miles above Earth locks onto its thermal signature. By the time smoke reaches the nearest town, your phone already knows. This is the power of NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System—the invisible guardian watching every flame on the planet, feeding real-time intelligence into Pandita Data's Brain Dashboard.

Right now, 10 active wildfires are burning across North America. The Heavy Timber fire spreads through Musselshell, Montana. The 18 Mile wildfire threatens Nevada rangeland. Meanwhile, controlled prescribed burns in Morrison, Minnesota—Infantry Platoon Battle Course, Center Range South—are being monitored with the same precision. For land managers, firefighters, and risk analysts, NASA FIRMS data is the difference between chaos and informed response.

HOW NASA FIRMS DETECTS FIRE FROM ORBIT

NASA's FIRMS system combines two powerful instruments: MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, and VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on Suomi NPP and NOAA-20. Together, they scan Earth's surface twice daily, with VIIRS providing intermediate passes every 3 hours. Each detection captures active fire locations at 375-meter resolution—precise enough to distinguish a burning structure from its surroundings, yet broad enough to track regional fire behavior.

The system detects fires by identifying thermal anomalies in the mid-infrared spectrum. A typical wildfire burns at 600–1,200 Kelvin. The satellites recognize this heat signature against the cooler background of surrounding landscape, then geolocate the pixel with GPS-grade accuracy.

⚡ FIRMS INTELLIGENCE

Each fire pixel contains confidence scores, thermal radiance measurements, and surrounding land cover type. A detection over a forest carries different risk weight than the same pixel over a prescribed burn zone. Pandita's AI learns these nuances.

FROM SATELLITE PIXEL TO WILDFIRE RISK SCORE

NASA FIRMS is the raw signal. Pandita's Brain Dashboard transforms it into actionable risk intelligence. When VIIRS locks onto the Heavy Timber wildfire in Musselshell, our AI ingests that detection alongside fuel moisture data, wind patterns, terrain slope, proximity to populated areas, and current evacuation status. The result: a live risk score updated every time a new satellite pass sweeps overhead.

Visit the Brain Dashboard to watch this happen in real time. See where wildfires are burning now. Check your city's wildfire risk in the Disaster Report. NASA sees the fire. Pandita translates it into understanding.

The planet is being watched. Twenty-four hours a day. From 438 miles up.
