On August 31, 1859, the Carrington Event scorched telegraph operators across the globe. Today, a repeat could black out power grids, disable satellites, and blind GPS for weeks. But we don't have to wait for catastrophe—we can measure the exact preconditions in real time. The Pandita Brain Dashboard tracks four interlinked solar signals, weighting them by physical consequence, to compute geomagnetic storm risk before it peaks.

THE MAGNETIC STORM RISK FORMULA

Geomagnetic storms don't arrive unannounced. They're born in the solar wind—a stream of charged particles escaping the Sun at roughly 400 km/s. When that wind carries embedded magnetic fields and crashes into Earth's magnetosphere, chaos unfolds. The Brain Dashboard ingests four real-time measurements and fuses them into a single risk score:

📡
Kp Index (45%)
The planetary K index measures Earth's magnetic disturbance on a 0–9 scale. NOAA updates it hourly. Higher Kp = more auroral expansion and deeper current injection into the ionosphere.
PRIMARY SIGNAL
💨
Solar Wind Speed (25%)
Faster wind = harder collision with the magnetosphere bow shock. Above 600 km/s, energy transfer accelerates. Current readings hover near quiet levels (~4 km/s today), but solar flares can spike this to 2000+ km/s in hours.
AMPLIFIER
🧲
Bz Component (20%)
The north–south orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Negative Bz (southward) opens Earth's magnetosphere to particle penetration. This is the trigger—more explosive than speed alone.
THE SWITCH

WHY Bz IS THE TRIGGER

Northward Bz shields us. Southward Bz tears the gates open. When Bz flips negative, the solar wind's magnetic field reconnects with Earth's own field at the subsolar point, dumping energy directly into the magnetotail. This is magnetic reconnection—the most violent process in space weather. A 10-nanoTesla southward excursion can raise the Kp index by 2–3 points in under 30 minutes.

LATITUDE MATTERS

Geomagnetic storms strike hardest at high latitudes (>60°). Alaska, northern Canada, and Scandinavia see auroras first—and power outages fastest. Mid-latitude countries (40–55°) feel major storms (Kp 7+) but remain largely shielded. Equatorial zones see minimal surface effects, though satellite drag still peaks.

WHAT MAGNETIC STORMS DAMAGE

A Kp 8 storm (severe) triggers transformer saturation in power grids, satellite drag that decays orbits, and HF radio blackouts. Insurance models now price geomagnetic risk into premiums. The 2012 solar storm that missed Earth would have cost $2 trillion in recovery had it hit directly.
