Satellite Intelligence Tab – Brain Dashboard

On any given day, Mexico City's sprawl of 21 million people sits beneath a veil of atmospheric haze—and satellite eyes never blink. While ground sensors measure what they can see, orbital instruments peer through cloud cover, detect moisture shifts in soil hours before floods arrive, and track vegetation stress weeks before wildfire season turns deadly. This is the Satellite Intelligence tab on Pandita Data's Brain Dashboard: real-time Earth observation that turns pixels into survival intelligence.

THE SATELLITE TAB

The Satellite Intelligence panel fuses four decades of NASA data with cutting-edge European Space Agency technology. Every layer tells a story: MODIS thermal signatures reveal hotspots hours after ignition. Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery, updated globally every 5 days, shows land-cover change with 10-meter precision. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) mapping penetrates monsoon clouds to track standing water. Night-light anomalies flag grid failures and mass evacuations. Together, they form a living X-ray of Earth's hazard landscape.

In Mexico City, Sentinel-2 revisits every 5 days, capturing subsidence patterns in Iztapalapa and aquifer stress across the Valley of Mexico. When the 2024 monsoon intensified, the dashboard's SAR layer showed exactly where drainage had failed 48 hours before news outlets reported it. Real-time beats eyewitness.

NASA MODIS
250m thermal and visible bands update every 1–2 hours. Detects fire hotspots, volcanic gas plumes, and sea-surface temperature anomalies across the full disk.

Sentinel-2 Change Detection
10m multispectral resolution, 5-day global revisit. Flags deforestation, crop stress, urban expansion, and landslide scars in real time.

SAR Flood Mapping
Radar sees through clouds and rain. Sentinel-1 and COSMO-SkyMed detect standing water, riverine extent, and inundation change in hours.

HOW SAR SEES THROUGH CLOUDS

Optical satellites are blind in rain. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is not. It transmits microwave pulses and listens to echoes—water surfaces bounce differently than dry ground, creating a radar signature that AI algorithms read instantly. When India's 2023 monsoon flooded the Mahanadi Delta, SAR caught 1.2 million acres of inundation while clouds still blanketed the region. By the time cloud-piercing optical data arrived, early warning had already moved.

NDVI: THE WILDFIRE FUEL GAUGE

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the dashboard's fuel-moisture crystal ball. It measures how much infrared light vegetation reflects—high NDVI means lush, moist plant matter. Low NDVI (negative to 0.3) means drought-stressed, desiccated biomass ready to burn. When California's August 2023 heat dome rolled in, NDVI across the Sierra Nevada plummeted in real time. Risk scores spiked days before the Park Fire ignited.

WHY THIS MATTERS

NDVI is not a forecast—it is a live measure of flammability. Unlike weather models, which predict future conditions, NDVI captures what is burning right now. Combine it with wind speed, humidity, and fire-weather indices, and you have the most powerful early-action tool in disaster prevention.
