On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake ruptured beneath the Indian Ocean. Within hours, waves as tall as buildings erased entire coastlines across Indonesia, Thailand, and Somalia. Nearly 230,000 people died—not because the tsunami was invisible, but because warning systems didn't exist. Today, that catastrophe echoes in every real-time tsunami dashboard worldwide. The Tsunami Risk tab on Pandita Data's Brain Dashboard represents the difference between seconds of chaos and seconds of survival.

THE TSUNAMI TAB

The Tsunami Risk module tracks three critical layers of threat: live NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center alerts, travel time maps showing exactly when waves will reach shore, and coastal inundation zones marking how far inland water will surge. As of today, zero significant earthquakes have triggered tsunami warnings across monitored regions—but that silence is deceptive. The system is always listening.

Lima's coastal zones are currently featured in the dashboard, a deliberate spotlight on South America's Pacific margin. Peru sits atop the Nazca Plate subduction zone, one of Earth's most prolific earthquake factories. A magnitude 7.0 or larger event offshore could generate destructive waves reaching Lima's beaches in under an hour.

HOW TSUNAMI TRAVEL TIME IS CALCULATED

Wave speed depends on ocean depth. In the deep Pacific (4,000+ meters), tsunamis travel 500+ mph—crossing the entire ocean in hours. As waves approach shallow continental shelves, friction slows them but amplifies their height. Pandita's simulation engine accounts for:

THE M7.0+ TRIGGER RULE

⚠️ TSUNAMI GENERATION THRESHOLD

Any magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquake triggers automated warnings in Pandita's Brain Dashboard. Not all M7.0+ events generate destructive tsunamis—depth and focal mechanism matter—but the rule ensures no dangerous event slips through the net. A shallow subduction-zone rupture at M7.0 can displace enough water to devastate coasts 10,000 km away.

In tsunami warning, the margin between tragedy and survival is measured in minutes. The Brain Dashboard is built to shrink that margin to zero.
