A seismic network spanning the entire planet just detected nothing. That's not reassuring—it's the opposite. Right now, somewhere in the world, tectonic plates are grinding against one another at millimeters per year, storing energy that will eventually rupture. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is listening with exquisite precision, and every earthquake strong enough to matter feeds directly into Pandita Data's Brain Dashboard, updating in near-real time.

When the next M4.5 event ruptures, you'll know within minutes. Not hours. Not from a news alert. From live seismic truth.

THE USGS GEOJSON FEED

The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program maintains a real-time GeoJSON API that streams all magnitude 4.5 and above earthquakes globally. This feed updates approximately every 5 minutes, delivering latitude, longitude, depth, magnitude, and timestamp for every significant seismic event. Pandita Data ingests this stream continuously, synchronizing it with our 3D Earth visualization and AI risk scoring engine.

Currently: 0 major events today—but that silence is temporary. On average, Earth experiences 15 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or stronger every single day.

HOW EARTHQUAKE DETECTION WORKS

When tectonic plates slip, they release energy as seismic waves. Sensitive instruments (seismometers) around the world record these vibrations. The USGS collects data from hundreds of stations, triangulates the epicenter, calculates magnitude using wave amplitude, and publishes the result within seconds to minutes. This is not prediction—this is real-time observation of geology in motion.

WHY M4.5+ THRESHOLD?

MAGNITUDE CUTOFF RATIONALE

M4.5 earthquakes are strong enough to be felt widely and cause minor structural damage. Below this threshold, millions of micro-earthquakes occur daily but carry negligible risk to infrastructure. The M4.5+ standard balances actionable intelligence with data manageability. Every event at this magnitude or stronger deserves monitoring.
